Bone Density Analysis

Osteoporosis is a disease where there is gradual thinning and weakening of the bones and commonly leads to fracture after even minimal trauma. It affects over 1 million Australians and is a major burden on the healthcare system.

The need for screening is paramount in the detection of osteoporosis given the absence of any symptoms associated with the disease.  The importance of early detection and ongoing monitoring is also important due to the increased risk of future fractures with each new osteoporotic fracture. It is reported that women who have sustained a fracture in their spine are 4 times the risk of having a further fracture within a  year.

Adelaide BodyScan's state of the art GE iDEXA is considered the gold standard in bone density analysis providing the most precise and efficient results. Bone density scans are non-invasive and completed within 10-15 minutes.

The iDEXA uses X-Ray radiation to measure bone mineral density in the spine, wrists and both hips, which are the most specific sites when assessing bone density. At Adelaide BodyScan we routinely scan both hips due to the difference frequently detected in bone density between sides, which can be attributed to varying degrees of asymmetry seen in individuals.

The list below is an example of the eligibility criteria for a BULK BILLED bone density scan at Adelaide BodyScan.

. Advanced Age ( 70years and over)

. Various Autoimmune or Metabolic conditions

.Certain Medications such as prolong steroid therapy

. Minimal Trauma Fracture

Consult with you GP to determine your eligibility for a bone density scan at Adelaide BodyScan.

The T-score compares the patient’s bone density to the peak bone density of young adults. It is the number of standard deviations (SDs) of the BMD measurement above or below the mean BMD of young healthy adults of the same sex. According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), osteopenia and osteoporosis can be diagnosed in individuals over 50 based on their T-score. The range for normal bone density is considered to be a T-score of above -1, Osteopenia is a T-Score ranging between -1 and -2.5, and a T-Score less than -2.5 is considered osteoporosis as per criteria set by the World Health Organisation.
