Total Body Compositions

  • How long does it take?

Allow about 10-15 minutes for your appointment 

  • What do i need to wear?

Comfortable clothing with minimal metal, any metal accessories we will ask you to remove it e.g belts, jewellery etc.

  • The cost of a Total Body Composition?

The scan is $95 this includes a run through of your report and a take home copy.

  • Do I need to fast in preparation of a TBC?

No you do not need to fast as it has minimal impact on results, but you can if you wish. 

  • How often can i have a TBC?

We recommend 6-12 months period to reassess changes in your body composition. However, this can very depending on individual training and fitness goals. 

  • Can i have a scan if I'm pregnant?

No. Despite the minimal dose of radiation, it is not recommended that you have a scan if you are pregnant. We will not scan anyone who is pregnant.

  • What age group is recommened?

Adults form 20 years old of age are eligible for scans. Normative data for younger population is not available for meaningful analysis of results given they may still be growing until this time.

  • What is the radiation dose i am exposed to?

As you can see, iDEXA Total Body Composition scans expose patients to minimal radiation doses, approximately 0.2% of annual background radiation dose.

Bone Density Analysis 

  • What Regions will be scanned?

AP spine, both hips and wrist if necessary.

  • How long does it take?

Allow about 10-15 minutes for your appointment.

  • What do i need to wear?

Comfortable clothing without trims is recommended. Any metal accessories in the target area will need to be removed e.g. belts, jewellery etc.

  • The cost of a Bone Density Scan?

At Adelaide BodyScans we BULK BILL all patients who meet Medicare eligibility critera. The cost is $95 if you do not meet the criteria. 

  • Medicare eligibility criteria:

Patients over the age of 70 years of age, patients who have previously undergone a bone density scan showing low bone density and patients with relevant co-morbidities e.g. hyperthyroidism, chronic liver/kidney disease etc. Your GP will be able to tell you whether you are eligible. 

  • Do I need a referral?

GP referrals are required before a Bone Density Scan can take place as they are a Medicare eligible scan.

  • How long until my GP gets a copy?

Allow about a week for our Endocrinologist to report your scan and our staff to send it to your GP.

  •  Can I have a scan if i'm pregnant?

NO. Despite the minimal dose of radiation, it is not recommended. 

  • How often can I have a bone density scan?

Depending on the results of your scan, you may be eligible for a repeat scan in 2 to 5 years.
